Day Camp

Our Summer Day Camp Program at Ward 5 is designed around the needs of children, and aims to ensure they have a fun summer vacation. We appreciate the desire of youth to remain active and healthy, and have thus created a day camp which will emphasize cultures, education and recreation. We will also expose our "campers" to the history and way of life of others. Summer time is a fun time for children, and we at Ward 5 have developed various day trips with this aspect in mind. Tours to sites such as the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame, and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (just to name a few), as well as metro's beaches and lakes will provide beneficial leisure time for your child (children). All beaches will be supervised, and it is required that your child bring their own lunch, drinks, snacks, sun screen (no less than 35), and a swimsuit and towel every day (rain or shine). Rainy day alternatives, such as indoor swimming, sports, crafts etc., will be available as part of the day camp. We strive for the day camp to be a place where children are safe, secure and have "Fun"!

Fees: Cost for the day camp, which will run from July to August (closed Canada Day and Natal Day) will be $60.00 per week per child.
Please Note: All fees are to be paid in advance, so that certain day trips and tours can be booked and paid for. Fees for the first two weeks are to accompany the registration form, and each succeeding week is to be prepaid.

Block Party

As with each preceding year, members of the neighbourhood will be pleased to know that our "Annual Block Party", will be held on the last Thursday of August each year, from 2:00-4:00 pm. The success in the past has been overwhelming, as the community has enjoyed music, food, games, prizes, and fun. This year will be better than ever, so come out and say hi!, as everyone is welcome. Please Note: In the event of rain, the party will be held inside the Centre.

Volunteers

To any individuals who feel they would like to help make a difference in the lives of others, we extend an invitation to donate some time. Volunteers are an essential part of Ward 5 Neighborhood Centre, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the Program Manager, at any time during the year (454-0018) to inquire about volunteering.

Regular Programming

All regular programming (excluding Food Bank and Seniors' Lunches) will be stopped for the summer months. For information on when these programs will be starting back up and to register for them, please contact the Centre.

Fall and Winter Children's Programs

Ward 5 Neighborhood Centre will again be offering their Fall and Winter Children's Programs starting in September, 2008. To register contact Susan Nordin at 454-0018.

POOR BOYS GOT THE BLUES!

“No Child Should Go To School Hungry”

Helping kids get a good start to their day is a top priority of Ward 5 Neighborhood Centre.  Statistics show that children who eat a balanced breakfast perform better in the classroom.

“No child should go to school hungry” is not only the motto of the Friends of 5, but also why Ward 5 Neighborhood Centre offers a breakfast program for children of families in the community.  As demand for the program increased, so did the need for funds.

“Friends of 5” surfaced in 1995, made up of about 10 volunteers from throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. The committee's mandate became “to raise money for Ward 5’s breakfast program.  They have since raised about $25,000 through this annual benefit, Poor Boys.  “Every ticket sold feeds a child for almost a week”

Our Poor Boys event is an evening of down home entertainment, along with a silent auction and a “Beans and Weiners” dinner.  The money raised will go a long way in helping support the breakfast program.

While together since 1995, this year the "Friends of 5" celebrate their 8th Annual Event, as well as years making a difference.  Your contribution makes a difference.
